Blocked drains, making sense of it!
As a professional I am always interested to hear how many of my clients have ignored the warnings signs and have ended up creating a much bigger problem. I find myself thinking, “if only they had paid attention.”
Recently I have fallen into the same trap of complacency, ignored the warning signs, and ended up with my own disaster.
Blocked drains signs are more obvious than you think, so using our senses and acting early will avoid a big mess. You probably think I am a little crazy but let me explain.
Sight is first sense. There is a blockage if you begin to see that your toilet, shower, bath or sink is draining slower than normal, and if it is bad, then the water may not drain away at all. The first thing to check is if it only one or all four areas that is draining poorly, if it only one then it should be an easy fix, however, if all of them are backed up, then the blockage is most likely to be in the main sewerage system drain.
Look out for a rise in water levels in the shower when the toilet is flushed, this an indicator that you’ve got a blocked drain on your hands. If you suspect anything go outside and check the external drains and manhole covers, the leaking might already be showing.
Sound is another great sign. Gurgling noises are a warning sign that your drains are getting blocked. The sound is created when air trapped in the pipes by the blockage is released and pushed up through the system.
Finally, smelling it! If something smells bad it is an indicator that something isn’t right anymore and the same for your drains. When it starts to smell bad then something has blocked the drain and begun to rot, and you are going to know about it. Often you will smell the problem before you see the problem, so if you catch a whiff of something being a little foul then don’t ignore it.
If you experience any of these signs, then might have a plumbing emergency on your hands.
